The artist, Médard Siegfried Tytgat, was a key figure in the second generation of Flemish Expressionists, and he applies their signature techniques with raw confidence; his energetic, almost violent, use of a palette knife builds a heavy impasto, giving the foreground a visceral, tactile quality. The painting almost certainly depicts the distinctive flat-topped tower of the Church of Our Lady of the Visitation in Lisseweghe, a village near Bruges, transforming the famous landmark into a stark, soulful silhouette. Nobody has been coaxed into smiling and there is none of the sweetness or sentimentality so often found in paintings of children from this period. Five different faces and expressions, brought tightly together into one remarkably strong composition.

I particularly love the restrained palette.
