Arthur Allan Wilson (1944–2024) was a Scottish artist and teacher whose life bridged two worlds: the disciplined, sculptural training of Edinburgh College of Art and the deeply human, transformative work of teaching. He studied Sculpture at ECA in the early 1970s, completing his DA at a time when the department was known for its rigorous focus on structure, form and the fundamentals of drawing. This early training shaped his visual language for the rest of his life - a language rooted in movement, balance and line.

Alongside his artistic practice, Wilson pursued wider academic study, completing a BA in Arts & Humanities with the Open University and a PGCE at Moray House. These paths led him into a forty year career as an art teacher at Wallace High School, where he became a much loved and quietly unconventional figure. Former pupils describe him as inspiring, gentle, and brilliantly different - a classic old school art teacher with alternative ways of seeing and teaching. His classroom became a place where confidence was built, individuality was encouraged and young people were taught not just how to draw, but how to think. A recent call out for memories brought more than 350 replies, a testament to the depth of his impact across generations.

While he chose teaching over the pursuit of a commercial art career, Wilson never stopped making. He worked privately, steadily, and without an audience, developing a body of drawings and mixed media studies that reveal a sculptor’s sensitivity to space, rhythm and form. These works, largely unseen during his lifetime - form a rare and intimate record of an artist who created for the sake of creating, guided by discipline, curiosity and a lifelong commitment to process.
