Tom Melville (1953–2025) created a body of work defined by its surreal, symbolic character — paintings shaped by places, memories and observations gathered across Scotland and further afield, then transformed into something more private, atmospheric and strangely altered. Working with the independence and intensity of an outsider, he refined this visual language over more than forty years. Alongside his own practice, Melville taught art locally, travelled widely in search of new material, and supported the small exhibitions that contributed to the cultural life of his community. Though he operated outside formal art circles, he became a familiar and respected local figure, known for his commitment to making art and encouraging others to do the same.

This collection of over sixty works offers a surreal, symbolic world shaped by an outsider imagination.
