Dunes by the Sea / Maurice Mathias (1912-2006), (c. Mid-20th Century)
The rugged energy of the French coast, rendered in thick, sculptural strokes of wind-swept colour.
Sand dunes, anchored by tough grasses and scrub, sweep across the canvas in energetic diagonals, their textured surfaces catching a cool, bright coastal light. Mathias works the oil paint with a palette knife and brush, building a tangible surface of whites, ochres, and lavenders that contrasts with the deep, earthy greens and purples of the vegetation. This is a landscape of pure sensation; every stroke conveys the feeling of the wind moving across the dunes towards the sharp, clean line of the sea.
