Moonlovers / Kees van Bohemen, (1975)
A raw, powerful embrace under a hypnotic moon, rendered in explosive planes of colour and line.
Two nude figures dissolve into one another, their bodies abstracted into a single, kinetic form through bold, gestural outlines of black and red. The artist sets the fleshy pink figures against a vibrant field of cerulean blue and a stark black sky, where a burnt-orange moon hangs like a solitary icon. This work is a classic example of post-war European expressionism; it's a raw and unapologetic exploration of human intimacy, its energy contained and amplified by the graphic power of the screenprint medium.
Kees van Bohemen was born in The Hague in 1928 and attended the city's Academy of Art. He lived in Paris from 1952-1957, during this time he shared a studio with Corneille. His work can be found in museums throughout The Netherlands.
