Ghostly Figure in Red (Indistinctly Signed), (c. Mid-20th Century)
Ghostly Figure in Red (Indistinctly Signed), (c. Mid-20th Century)
A haunting modernist figure emerges from the gloom, its form defined by texture as much as by paint.
A solitary figure, featureless and anonymous, is enveloped in a bulky, brick-red garment against a dark, atmospheric ground. The artist works the paint with a heavy impasto, mixing it with an aggregate like sand to give the robe a startling, abrasive tactility that contrasts with the flat, muted background. This is a work of raw, post-war existentialism; the figure is less a portrait and more a presence, a quiet monument to human endurance rendered in the very grain of the earth.
