Japanese Lacquerware Two Layer Jubako Box - c1920

Traditional Japanese lacquerware Jūbako, made of lightweight wood.

The two-layer lacquered box is decorated on different sides with traditional symbols of Japanese plants and a bright red lacquered interior. 

Jūbako are tiered boxes used in Japan to display food, often used to hold osechi (traditional Japanese New Year food) or bento (lunch).

They make wonderful jewellery boxes.
