Happy Days Are Here Again / Peter Bes, (1973)
Happy Days Are Here Again / Peter Bes, (1973)
A witty Pop Art composition where domestic comfort collides with cool, graphic modernism.
A humble, sliced loaf of rustic pâté, its colourful flecks of pink and green rendered with startling clarity, becomes the monumental subject of this deadpan scene. The composition is a collage of textures and forms: flat, absolute black is set against patterned fields and dry, scraped marks, while a small, tender image of an embracing couple floats in the upper corner. The title, 'Happy Days are here again', functions with sharp irony, juxtaposing the promise of celebration with the cold, graphic reality of the everyday.
Medium: Screenprint with hand-colouring on paper
Inscription on Front: In pencil below the image: 'eigendruk 10/25' (lower left), "'Happy days are here again'" (centre) and signed 'P Bes '73' (lower right).
Condition: Framed in a vintage light wood frame. The paper shows light, even toning and some foxing to the mat, consistent with its age. The print itself is in very good condition with strong colours.
