Homage to the Painter on the Road / Peter Bes, (1976)
Homage to the Painter on the Road / Peter Bes, (1976)
A brilliant, layered composition where a modern cyclist races past the ghost of Vincent van Gogh.
A brightly coloured cyclist, rendered in the clean, graphic language of Pop Art, occupies the foreground, their form a sharp arrangement of red, yellow, and blue. Behind them, a ghostly echo of Van Gogh's lost masterpiece, 'The Painter on the Road to Tarascon', is rendered in a sketchy, monochromatic olive green that evokes the raw energy of late 19th-century printmaking. This is a sophisticated work of postmodern homage; Bes creates a dialogue across time, contrasting the sleek anonymity of the modern athlete with the romantic, tragic figure of the artist-pilgrim.
