Thatched Cottage with Figures / W. Duyn, (1973)
Thatched Cottage with Figures / W. Duyn, (1973)
A dense, sculptural surface animates this rustic Flemish idyll with a surprising expressive force.
A thatched longhouse, rendered in heavy impasto and incised line, anchors the composition with its sagging roof and weathered plaster, while two figures in quiet conversation lend the scene a folkloric intimacy. The cracked, stratified sky glows with sulphurous orange and teal, echoing Van Gogh’s palette but applied here with a more deliberate, textural intensity. The entire surface is sculptural, creating a world where nostalgia and the material of the paint itself become one.
