The firm was founded in 1870 to manufacture box files and flourished for several decades in the trade of commercial stationery and equipment.
The furniture-making arm operated under the trade name Fyne Lady (which this piece has its original label), aimed at the middle class market, producing diluted version of current styles of Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and International Modern. During the First World War it made aircraft parts, returning to furniture making after.
