Misty Harbour / Unknown Artist (Indistinctly Signed), (c. Mid-20th Century)
A waterside city dissolves into pure atmosphere, a landscape of memory and mist.
A line of buildings emerges from a silvery mist, their forms rendered with such soft edges that the distinction between architecture, water, and sky nearly disappears. The artist employs a tonalist palette of cool blues and muted greys, applying the paint with feathery, vertical strokes that unify the composition in a veil of diffused light. This is a quiet, lyrical work, a masterful study in mood where solid forms are secondary to the transient effects of light on water.
