Bare willows cast quiet reflections in winter waters.
Pollarded willows line a riverbank in a soft procession, their reflections dancing across mauve-tinted water under a sky of soft greys and pale blue. The artist's brushwork is insistent but never showy; grasses are rendered with loose strokes while the trees are constructed from short, deliberate marks that follow the twist of each trunk. McAndrew's strong sense of atmosphere and compositional structure places him within the great British tonal tradition, creating a work of quiet, personal recollection.
