Moderne Surrealistisch Waterlandschap / Jan de Veen, (1983)
In this superb example of Dutch Magic Realism, artist Jan de Veen renders a silent, melancholic world where monumental fungi preside over a desolate volcanic landscape.
The painting depicts a strange and silent landscape, dominated by a cluster of gigantic, meticulously rendered mushrooms. Set against a luminous, crepuscular sky, these fungal forms contrast sharply with the vast, empty plain that recedes towards a solitary volcanic peak. Created in 1983, the work is a compelling example of Dutch Magic Realism, a style defined by its hyper-realistic technique applied to uncanny and mysterious subjects. It follows in the Netherlandish tradition of fantastical art from Hieronymus Bosch to the 20th-century master Carel Willink, whose death in the same year lends the painting a poignant, elegiac quality.
