Where shall Wisdom be found? / Robert Traill Rose, (1906)

Where shall Wisdom be found? / Robert Traill Rose, (1906)

A profound Symbolist watercolour by the Scottish artist Robert Traill Rose, this work presents a timeless philosophical question through stark, allegorical imagery.

Directly quoting the Book of Job, the composition poses its titular question with arresting visual force. An infant, representing nascent humanity, sits on a desolate shore contemplating a skull, a classic memento mori symbolizing the finite nature of human understanding. Behind them, a mysterious, prophetic figure emerges from the rocks, a personification of ancient wisdom set against a cosmic, star-filled sky. This piece is intimately connected to Rose's celebrated 1902 illustrations for The Book of Job and embodies the Symbolist movement's deep engagement with mythology, dreams, and the inner life. The artwork is a powerful meditation on the search for meaning in the face of mortality.

Medium: Watercolour and gouache on paper.

Inscription on Front: Signed 'R.T. Rose' lower left; titled 'Where shall Wisdom be found ?' below image; monogrammed 'EBL' for the recipient, E. Bruce Low, lower right.

Inscription on Verso: The backing board is inscribed and signed by the artist: 'To E. Bruce Low— with the artist's best regards Robert T. Rose 1906'.

Condition: The work is in very good condition, with strong colours and minimal age toning. The period frame has some minor scuffs and wear consistent with its age.
