A large monochrome etching and aquatint by Swedish artist Louis Bastin, showing a solitary figure standing before an easel.

Born in Moscow in 1912 to French and German parents, Bastin moved with his family to Sweden after the First World War. He studied in Paris before continuing his training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, and became best known for his printmaking, particularly etching and aquatint.

His work often focused on interiors, figures and quiet moments of everyday life, handled in a restrained and atmospheric style. Bastin’s prints are represented in major public collections including the British Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Moderna Museet in Stockholm.

Begrundan translates approximately as reflection or contemplation.
