Joyce Platt was born in 1920, the only daughter of Wilfred Platt the city engineer of Bradford. She studied at Leed Arts School and post-graduate at Royal Academy Schools in London. She was an acknowledged portrait painter, commissioned to paint portraits throughout her life.
Her first work to be exhibited was at Cartwright Hall, Bradford when she was 14. She then exhibited extensively throughout the UK including at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.
In 1950 she married Scotsman John Butter in Nairobi Cathedral, he was posted in Nairobo at the time on behalf on the British government. She died in 2010 in the Scottish Borders.
