A striking mid century Belgian oil on board by the artist G. Stroobant.
A low house sits beneath an expanse of deep blue sky, the landscape reduced to flattened planes of colour and simplified, almost geometric forms. The foreground is particularly good, heavily worked in earthy greens and ochres with lines incised directly into the painted surface.
There is very little currently recorded about G. Stroobant, despite the distinctly Belgian surname and confident signature. The reverse, however, retains an old numbered label from Galerie Moderne in Brussels, the long established Belgian auction house founded in the 1930s, providing a lovely piece of provenance and firmly connecting the painting with the Belgian art market.
The painting appears to date from the post-war period, most likely the 1950s or 1960s, when the boundary between landscape painting and abstraction was increasingly being explored by Belgian artists.
Signed lower right “Stroobant G.” Old numbered Galerie Moderne, Bruxelles auction house label verso.
