A beautifully stylised woodland watercolour by British artist Frederick William Baldwin, signed and dated 1935.
Baldwin approaches the landscape with a distinctly decorative eye. Tall, slender trees are simplified into elegant, angular forms, their branches picked out in fine linear drawing and delicate washes of muted green, ochre and soft terracotta.
Rather than painting a dense mass of foliage, he gives each tree its own shape and character. The flattened clusters of leaves and open spaces between the branches create an almost rhythmic pattern across the paper.
There is something of the Arts and Crafts tradition in his treatment of natural forms, with an almost Japanese quality to the carefully balanced composition.
Painted in 1935, just a year after Baldwin exhibited at the Royal Academy and Royal Society of British Artists.
Frederick William Baldwin (1899–1984)
Frederick William Baldwin was a British watercolourist and draughtsman, born in Lowestoft, Suffolk, on 17 March 1899.
The son of a bricklayer, Baldwin was self-taught as an artist, working principally in pencil, pen and watercolour.
By 1934, he was exhibiting at both the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists, while living in Westhall, Suffolk.
His work encompassed the towns, villages, architecture and landscapes of East Anglia, particularly his native Suffolk. His watercolours demonstrate a strong sense of draughtsmanship, combining carefully observed detail with a considered approach to composition.
Following the Second World War, Baldwin received commissions to produce watercolours of Suffolk locations for the London and North Eastern Railway. These were reproduced as carriage prints, bringing his paintings to passengers travelling across Britain.
His work is represented in the National Trust collection at Anglesey Abbey, which holds his watercolour Coe’s Fen, Cambridge, dated 1946.
