Maurice Wyckaert Belgian | 1923 - 1996

Maurice Wyckaert Belgian | 1923 - 1996

A colour lithograph by Maurice Wyckaert, a Belgian neo-expressionist painter, titled "Spiegel aan de wand" - Mirror on the Wall - 1971.

Maurice Wyckaert (15 November 1923 – 17 July 1996) was a Belgian artist. He is a neo-expressionistic, lyrical abstract painter, gouache designer and printmaker. He was educated at the Academy of Brussels (1940–1947 and 1949–1950.

Although Wyckaert was already critically acclaimed, by receiving several honors such as the Jules Raeymaekers of the Royal Academy Award, an honorable mention by JPB (1957) and an honorable mention by São Paulo Art Biennial (1961), his true breakthrough began at the beginning of the 1970s. Around this time he started experimenting with gouache, printmaking and lithography.

Wyckaert was known for his pro-active involvement in several art movements such as being the Co-founder of Belgian art magazine De Meridiaan and Taptoe Brussels (1955). Also he was a member of Présence (1949), the Situationist International (SI) and the International Movement for an Imaginist Bauhaus[1] and well known for his influence and intimate friendship with several CoBrA-members.

Artist’s Proof and Signed in pencil along side EA.

AP (artist’s proof)
Also sometimes called by its French name, epreuve d’artiste, or EA, this is effectively a test print for the artist to check the plate from which the final image is printed.
Ironically, in the early days of printmaking, these were often the best quality versions, as there was no wear and tear on the plates at this early stage. Usually the first 20 or so of a print run, numbered separately to the main limited edition run, they were often kept by the artist or sold later.
Technology has, of course, moved on, and now an entire run of litho or giclée prints will all be of the same high quality. Many artists, though, still enjoy the tradition of having a special artist’s proof edition, and the value of them lies not in their quality, but in owning a rare print. This rarity makes them much sought-after by collectors.
Artist’s proofs are clearly signalled on the reproduction.
