Saturday Afternoon is an atmospheric Edinburgh garden painting by Scottish artist Lady Caroline Kininmonth (1907-1978). Worked in soft greens, blues and muted tones, the painting captures a view from the artist's home in The Grange, looking across the cricket ground towards Blackford Hill and the Royal Observatory.

The original handwritten label on the reverse gives the artist's address at The Lane House, 46a Dick Place, Edinburgh, and the title Saturday Afternoon.

Caroline Kininmonth was born in Edinburgh in 1907 and studied at Edinburgh College of Art between 1926 and 1930 under D. M. Sutherland and David Alison. She became an established Scottish painter, particularly known for her landscapes, botanical subjects and still lifes.

She exhibited regularly at the Royal Scottish Academy, showing approximately 25 works between 1940 and 1975. She also exhibited with the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, the Society of Scottish Artists and the Scottish Society of Women Artists. Her work was included in Arts Council exhibitions and is represented in the collections of the University of Edinburgh and the Scottish Arts Council.

She was married to the distinguished Scottish architect Sir William Kininmonth, who designed their modernist home at 46a Dick Place in collaboration with Basil Spence during the 1930s.

This is a particularly interesting Edinburgh painting, connecting the artist's own home, her everyday surroundings and a familiar view towards Blackford Hill.
