A woman sweeps the pavement while a cat waits beside her, set against the clean geometry of an almost empty street. The restrained palette, confident draughtsmanship and carefully balanced composition give the painting a remarkably modern feel despite its wartime date.
The broad expanse of wall, repeated windows and solitary figure create a painting that feels calm, thoughtful and timeless.
The artist's identity remains under investigation. The painting is clearly signed and dated, but despite extensive research we have not yet been able to attribute it with confidence.
