An atmospheric Scottish landscape, painted in a beautifully restrained palette of soft green, muted gold, ochre and earthy brown.
A low range of hills stretches across the horizon, with dark clusters of trees breaking up the open fields below. Above them, a remarkable sky moves between pale yellow and soft blue-green, giving the painting its gentle, almost dreamlike quality.
The handling is loose and expressive, with an Impressionistic and slightly Post-Impressionist sensibility. Rather than describing every detail, the artist concentrates on colour, atmosphere and the relationship between the land and the changing light.
It was the sky that made me buy this painting. There is something particularly lovely about its softness and the way the colours settle into one another.
The reverse of the stretcher bears a pencil inscription reading 'Mcloud', although the artist's identity has not been conclusively established.
A quietly beautiful example of 20th-century landscape painting, with an appealing sense of stillness and atmosphere.
Unsigned on the front as far as currently established. Pencil inscription 'McLoud' to stretcher verso. Undated.
Oil on canvas.
